I feel like I
have traded roles this summer with my students as I experiment with the simple

I gathered a stack of New Yorker magazines last week. I
thought using them for collage would be more of a challenge than using
something known for wonderful photographic illustrations such as National
Geographic, Martha Stewart, or Vogue. It turns out they are fantastic for the
kinds of collage I had in mind. </div>

The advertisements and illustrations, when torn or cut in
small pieces, provide an extensive palette of colors and textures. I created one
series with torn pieces, glued to patterned backgrounds from old wallpaper
sample books. I am working on a second series now where each edge of each piece
is cut with scissors. The second series is my first foray into paper crazy
quilts. After all the pieces are
glued in place, I am drawing little stitch lines with a fine point marker along
each join to simulate the hand stitching of a crazy quilt. I plan to make some
more elaborate drawn embroidery marks as well. </div>

I spent a pleasant week a-gathering and creating. The
weather has been phenomenal this summer with each warm and sunny day followed
by another equally warm and sunny day. I finally got to pounding the petunias,
which is always a fun time. I love the absurdity of it, as well as the physical
involvement with the tools. I also love making art outside in the weather. I
did one arrangement of sorts by placing the flowers down one at a time. I plan
to do more of this and perhaps incorporate the flower prints into another
textile work, and try some on paper as well. It was swell of the Winooski folks
to give me a whole plant so I can continue my explorations. </div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
I got a Vermont road Atlas in a free box by the curb after
yard sales were done last week (collage parts), a couple of trout neckties from
the thrift shop(textile collage parts), and this weekend I found a $1 vintage
aluminum sprinkler (the kind that goes from side to side) at a garage
sale.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>This is the type my sister
and I used as teens when we would slather ourselves with baby oil, set up our
reclining lawn chairs, and lie down for a nice sprinkle and sun bath. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
On my drive home, as is often the case (the movement of the
car stimulates my little grey cells) two ideas for the sprinkler popped into my
head. I can see a large piece of watercolor paper with powdered tempera paint
or concentrated watercolor paints applied randomly, then this paper would be
laid out on the ground so that the sprinkler would sprinkle it off and on. The
other idea is a bit more involved. I would lay a sheet of plastic down, apply
some kind of paint to the surface of the plastic, then put on my bathing suit
and run through the sprinkler and into the wet paint making footprints and
other marks, Then I could lay large paper down on top of the wet paint-y marks
and pull some prints. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>It sounds
like a good messy time. </div>

I have been working on a series of small yo-yo quilt style

across and three rows down, in order to explore different pattern

Last weekend a plethora of plastic dinosaurs presented themselves. I
pondered them for a day or two. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>At
last I pictured them wearing some kind of hand-made apparel, but what? I
decided on teeny, tiny crocheted scarves. I was going to make them all black,
but in communing with the dinos further, they informed me that they wished to
be more stylish, and so I have chosen vibrant colors to match their individual
personalities. Perhaps if they had been properly dressed they would have been
better prepared to survive the drastic climate change that did them in. This
reminds me of one of my favorite riddles – from my dinosaur joke book – yup – a
whole book of jokes about dinosaurs from my elementary school teaching days.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
This week's explorations involved the usual strange array of materials. I mentioned in a previous post some experiments I was doing with drawing and stamping on inkjet printer ribbon cartridges to make multiple mysterious markings. I got a quantity of unused ribbons for free so I felt that I could try whatever came into my mind. I created several of these prints on cloth. The completed prints seemed to need another layer of equally skitchy marks. I created this layer with embroidery, using a nice thick, perky thread, rather than embroidery floss, because I like the way it sits on the surface with a certain presence. This kind of thread, especially in black, always reminds me of suturing thread - perfect for mending what ails you. I worked on these pieces in wooden embroidery hoops which I then used for display.</div>

It was only after I completed one of these pieces that I
made the connection to the serendipitous meeting with Sister Marie Charlotte at
the nun’s yard sale a couple of weeks ago. These works in the round are very reminiscent of cross section
scenes as viewed under a microscope. You can read more about this in my
previous post –</div>

For another series I used a metallic yarn that I got at this
same retired nun’s yard sale glued to cast off cardboard to create a printing
block. I then inked the plate with
water- based printing ink and a rubber brayer, and printed it on a variety of
papers. I was quite pleased by the simplicity of the technique and the final
prints. </div>

Gathering Winooski June 30, 2012</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
What a great week! Fun finds, and the generosity of
strangers. I think people in Winooski are pleased that the Pop-up Galleries and
the accompanying events are bringing people into downtown this summer, and as a
result they seem happy to contribute items to the project.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I had fun
exploring the candy wrappers donated by the Pho Dang Vietnamese Restaurant with
needle, thread, and some satin cording I had picked up at the retired nun’s
yard sale. They turned into butterfly blossoms and were finished with a
wall-mounted installation in a vintage glass flower frog.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
After hot
crayon markings on the striped oxford shirt with stitch, I continued the oxford
exploration with a similar technique to the one used on the candy wrappers.
There is a summery nature theme emerging, as these too turned into butterfly
blossoms, and a whole bouquet of them is now displayed in a vintage glass
bottle. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The Peking Duck Restaurant donated a bag full of fortune
cookies (how fortunate!) that I quickly put to good use creating cellophane
blossoms on wooden coffee stirrer stems (from Cupps Bakery). I stained the fortunes with soy sauce
and stitched them together on the machine into a good luck garland. It hangs
above the altered photos of Winooski folks from the past, wishing them luck in
their new incarnation. I ate a few of the fortune cookies, but saved the rest
for some yet to be determined project. Pulverize them into some kind of
sculpture medium? Mix them with matte medium to create a texture for collage? I
welcome suggestions.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I was visiting downtown Winooski in the drizzle the other morning
and happened to spot a group of folks planting flowers in the island near the
roundabout. I had a nice chat with Zack, who works for the city of Winooski,
who informed me the flowers are donated by various local establishments, as
well as some from Claussens’ Greenhouse, are planted by volunteers, and watered
and maintained by the city. When I explained about my project and my desire for
a red petunia blossom or two, I was gifted with two entire petunia plants, one
in red, and one in magenta. I can hardly wait to get out the rubber mallet and
have a go at them. I have a nice soft well-worn cotton sheet from the Winooski
church thrift shop that should do nicely for my canvas.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The first night at my studio in residence Thursday was
swell. I received a few visitors, worked away on some projects, and listened in
to the poetry reading by Mark Awodey, and John Dooley. A most enjoyable
evening.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I found some unusual and fun materials to explore and
although they did not all come from Winooski, in the spirit of the project I
will combine them with other items and fulfill my mission. Did you know that
you can crochet with cassette tape, and stamp with button and cork stampers on
inkjet printer ribbon cartridges to make multiple mysterious markings? Stay
tuned for more on these creations.</div>

Gathering Winooski – June 24, 2012</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Well this past weekend was filled with the magic of the
hunt.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I began on Friday gathering sticks and stones down by the
Winooski River near the River Walk. I made a small collection. I have some
ideas for them but nothing certain. When I got home I took a pen knife and sat
on the stoop and scraped off some of the bark. I enjoyed this girl scout
moment.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I also made my first cold call to a Winooski business with
great results. The nice young woman at the Pho Dang Vietnamese Restaurant on
Main St. gave me a generous container full of candies in vivid colored
wrappers. I have begun to take the wrappers apart and investigate their sculptural
properties with needle and thread.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
On Saturday the magic kicked into full gear with an intuitively
driven stop at a yard sale held by the retired Catholic nuns at Our Lady of Providence.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
There were many
wonderful treasures to be found there. Most stunning was a 1950’s era Singer
sewing machine in the cabinet for a pittance. It is very similar to the machine
my mom had when I was a girl. After I set up my studio at the gallery several
days before, I had said to a friend – “now all I need is an old fashioned
sewing machine to connect me to the Winooski Mill’s textile history”.
Voila!<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Thank-you sisters!</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
This machine was very well cared for and included all of its
attachments (no pun intended) and its manual. The previous owner obviously cherished
this machine. I could tell by the way all the items were carefully placed in
the drawers, including a couple of packets of silica gel, to keep away moisture.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
While at the sale I ran into a nun who I had worked with
back in 1976 and had not seen since, Sister Marie Charlotte. We were lucky
enough to both be part of a group that spent a week at Shelburne Farms, living
together, cooking and eating together, and making art all day. It was an
experimental program at the time, testing out whether the great house could be
used for purposes other than single-family occupancy. All the participants were
either from the Department of Education, the Vermont Council on the Arts, or
were arts grant recipients.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I was right out of college and was working as a graduate
intern in the department of education and was fortunate to attend as part of my job. I
chose the dance focus, and each day we did modern interpretive dance on the
south porch and the lawns of the estate, swooping and prancing through the
gardens and down to the lake. Think Isadora Duncan. What an experience.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I later was assigned to Sister Marie Charlotte’s program and
paid her a visit at St. Francis Xavier School where she was the art teacher.
She had written a grant to use microscopes to explore nature as inspiration for
her students. They examined all kinds of things through the lense and then
created drawings, paintings, sculptures, and stitchery. I thought it was a
really cool project at the time (still do). What an interesting juxtaposition
running into sister Marie Charlotte all these years later while out
gathering things for my art series. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
While delivering the sewing machine to the gallery right
afterwards, several pieces of burned newspaper blew by my feet, including the
burned personals – yup, you heard me – the scorched personals page from Seven
Days. You can’t make this stuff up. Of course I stuffed this in my bag for
later.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
One other visit of note, not in Winooski, but heck, I was on
a roll so I drifted over into Colchester, where I found an overhead projector,
again for a song. Now I have wanted to own one of these for some time for
teaching and art making. Years ago, I had borrowed one from a city department
and taken it into the preschool classroom for several projects with the kids.
They loved the magic of it. At the end of that year, I interviewed each
child for “About The Artist” bios for their preschool art show. One
of the questions I asked was “what was your favorite medium”.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Children responded with all kinds of
things -paint, clay, printmaking etc. But one boy, when I put the question to
him said simply “light!”.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I asked the man who was selling it at the garage sale what
he had done with the machine. He said he used it to teach. I inquired what he
taught with it and he said “celestial navigation”. Yup –I’ll say it again – you
just can’t make this stuff up.</div>

For the opening I installed the photographic piece pictured.
It is titled “Gathering Winooski” and is the kick-off for the project. To
create it I took several photos from my collection of vintage studio portraits
(cabinet cards) that were from Winooski photo studios, scanned them, printed
them on lightweight watercolor paper, and enhanced them with machine
stitch. They are pinned to the
wall with straight pins, as befits their stitched incarnation. Each photo is
sewn in a spontaneous way, as I try to let the photographic image guide me in
its enhancement. At times the stitched (drawn) line reflects or repeats a motif
somewhere in the photo, such as the stripes in the man’s tie, or the pleats in
the little girl’s dress, and at other times the machine just winds its way
around the image as it wishes.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The other photos here show my mini-studio space in the
gallery in the eerie, early evening light. It is blessedly spare and furnished
with all vintage items; metal typing table, metal chair, enamel bowls. I have a
thing for the white enamel bowls, and have been collecting them for many years.
As often as possible I store my supplies in them in my studio wherever I am.
One of my favorite tasks in preparing a new space, is the ritual washing of the
bowls. I love to sit in the grass or in my courtyard, and wash out the bowls,
preparing them for a new season, a new location or a new series of work. For me
this act connects me to the past, where many of my creative ingredients come
from. Or perhaps it is a connection to my past as a laundress, seamstress, or
milliner.</div>Jude Bondhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13277365645458299536noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8772614344761116300.post-91732095062061115542012-06-24T15:18:00.001-07:002012-06-24T15:18:59.668-07:00Gathering Winooski -All About It<style>

launched me in a new direction. I began to go out each week and gather simple
materials that could be found for free or very cheap, and make art out of only
those materials. I could add in basic things like glue, paint, and tape, but
the primary materials had to be what was found or gathered during that

</div><div class="MsoNormal">When I saw this book at the Re-use Zone it purred. The illustrations were so wonderful and I was curious about some of those unfamiliar cats. That same day I found the Harpers Magazines and the series took shape in my mind before I was even back to my car. It then took me some time to select the fashion cats to match up with the wild cats. I like to cut things out and ponder them for some time before gluing. Then I usually reach a point when I just decide, enough pondering for heaven’s sake, just glue it. Again, it is that issue of preciousness, the question of “but what if I glue it and then find a better match for that one? “ etc. etc. Having a somewhat obsessive compulsive personality coupled with a short attention span is a challenge at times…</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">After all the fashion cats were glued up I realized some of them needed collars and some needed hats. I used the jewelry ads from the same Harpers magazines to create their millinery finery. For this series I did scan the original book pages and printed them onto matte photo paper. I did this because there were many pages that had illustrations on both sides and I wanted to use all of them. This also provides the option for me to make a second batch down the road if I so desire. </div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />

Here is the first bowl. I got the bowl for free. I liked the shape and the slight foot. I was not sure if it would work because of the foot, but thought it was worth a try. I covered the bottom with Vaseline and then used the torn coffee filters and papier mache paste to construct the bowl. I lost track of how many layers I put on, but after about three layers I felt it was strong enough and I cut it off the bowl with a utility knife, and then patched the seam with several more layers of papier mache so the seam does not show. It is quite strong, yet also slightly translucent, especially around the inside of the bottom where the foot is. I find it interesting that the one area that I thought might create the problem ended up being my favorite part. I was sitting on the back deck while working on the last layer when drifting cottonwood fluff caught my eye. I gathered some up and applied it with paste for the final inside layer.</span>Jude Bondhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13277365645458299536noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8772614344761116300.post-37704420008132255132011-06-23T11:53:00.000-07:002011-06-24T16:39:46.672-07:00Entry #5 What I Did On My Summer Vacation - Anti-Oxident Art<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi46Nlyp4php8borLmkqGtxJ8bKfRtYcVO2GkSePMLHGK2p7fVSNL7QlnECGMMM2FRpdm1Xyox-wXhE_sQsbwNJxamVfSlMAPD3ir0BsSvx-fEqvQBLHcik0ZfOOR5dtCc758_WL6kP3Xwo/s1600/pom+filters+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi46Nlyp4php8borLmkqGtxJ8bKfRtYcVO2GkSePMLHGK2p7fVSNL7QlnECGMMM2FRpdm1Xyox-wXhE_sQsbwNJxamVfSlMAPD3ir0BsSvx-fEqvQBLHcik0ZfOOR5dtCc758_WL6kP3Xwo/s320/pom+filters+1.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><style>

</div><div class="MsoNormal">I have gathered some more intriguing parts, but for the time being I am continuing to work with the coffee filters. I dyed some more with tea and also dyed a batch with pomegranate juice. I looooove the color they came out. I am making another yo-yo piece with the pink ones and will post it when it is finished. Meanwhile I am enjoying the way they look while drying. I like to use old things as tools and implements whenever possible when making art, and these antique bottles were just the ticket for drying the little coffee filter discs. In the pomegranate coffee filter photo my boxed-up studio can be seen slightly out of focus in the background. It is a little out of focus for now, but that is ok.</div>Jude Bondhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13277365645458299536noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8772614344761116300.post-86236191712256593812011-06-21T12:44:00.000-07:002011-06-21T12:44:59.670-07:00Entry #4 What I did On My Summer Vacation - Coffee? </div><div class="MsoNormal">A week or so ago I found a package of coffee filters. I knew they had great potential so I took them home. I have been working on several different pieces with them, but the first one is finished so I wanted to share it. I will post the others when they are complete. I tea-dyed the filters to give them a mottled sepia look. I then hand stitched them into the yo-yo form that I have used before in textile artwork. They are quite strong and flexible and are a pleasure to work with. I love sewing on paper by hand or machine. The only things I used from my studio were tea, needle and thread. </div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />

There is the drive, short or longer. There is the accompanying loud music played on the car stereo, and the stops at local bakeries for sustenance. But equally important are the conversations, both the ones I participate in, and the ones I overhear. </div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">This week while visiting a particularly fertile hunting ground(i.e. – a local dump), I was joined by several others who were happily picking away. Two of the women seemed to know each other, and were chatting about this and that. A man came in that one of the women knew and they exchanged greetings. Then the first woman, I will call her Alice, said to all of us present, “did you know that George here was the one that saved that baby’s life a couple of years ago. He was written up in the paper and was on the news and everything.” “Yes”, said George proudly, “that was me alright. It was June, 2008.” Then Alice proceeded to tell us about George’s valiant deed. Apparently, there was an infant with her mother out at a public place somewhere. The baby stopped breathing suddenly and was starting to turn blue, and no-one knew what to do. George stepped up and said, “ I know CPR, let me try.” And sure enough, he did mouth to mouth resuscitation on that baby and saved its life. While this conversation was taking place I was listening and also continuing to look at the objects that were displayed. Just as I was picking up a figure of Mary and baby Jesus from a discarded Crèche scene, George spoke again. “Yes”, he said. “The Lord wanted me to be in that exact place at that exact moment.”<br />
<br />
Mary and Baby Jesus came home with me that day.<br />
When I got home I did a little research. See link below. <br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="MsoNormal">Already I am thinking of changing the title of the series to Precious. This word and concept is in my mind a lot these days.</div><div class="MsoNormal">In the studio flooding I lost some things that were precious to me. Not a lot of things, and I am well aware that so many have lost so much more right here in Vermont with the astounding flooding this spring, so I am not complaining, just explaining.</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">As a collector of vintage items these objects do seem precious to me in some ways. They are precious because they are filled with memory. They are precious because they embody history. </div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">When I gathered for the first grouping in this new series I found vintage greeting cards. I did not want to cut them up. They seemed too precious. But how was I going to make collages out of them without cutting them up? Usually I would scan them so as to still possess the originals. I decided this time I was not going to do that. I was going to fight my feelings about their preciousness and make some art out of them. When I began to cut them apart the words inside the greeting cards grabbed my attention as well as the imagery. One of the words was “precious”. </div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">In this series I am not going to make any distinction between art and craft. I might make a collage, an Art Textile, a fashion accessory, or a home décor item. This is another way of addressing the issue of precious-ness. Are only art works that have no practical usage precious, and can only those art works enter into the rarified realm? Can objects made from humble materials rise to the rarified realm of art? Can useful creations be art or just artful?</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">Here are the before and after pictures of the first gathering.</div><div class="MsoNormal">The only thing I used from my studio was mat board, scissors, and rubber cement.</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="MsoNormal">It has been two months since my studio was flooded out of the downstairs. Two months of my collections and supplies being boxed up, and stacked up, awaiting a new home. I have not been myself. I am twitchy. Crocheting is not doing the trick. It took me a few weeks to learn how to make lemonade from these particular lemons. I finally realized it is the perfect time to begin a series that I have been pondering for a while. I am not sure what to call it but “What I Did On My Summer Vacation” is a good working title. Here is the plan – I go out hunting and gathering on the weekend, or during the week depending on the weather. I gather a few items that may or may not seem related. I make art with just those items. I then move on to the next gathering phase for the next piece or pieces. I want to do something that has parameters and structure. I want to challenge myself in this way. </div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">Here are my guidelines/rules:</div><div class="MsoNormal">-gather the parts/collection</div><div class="MsoNormal">-get as many materials as possible for free or cheap </div><div class="MsoNormal">-photograph the parts/collection before using them</div><div class="MsoNormal">-make something out of the parts/collection </div><div class="MsoNormal">-photograph the piece(s) when complete</div><div class="MsoNormal">-I do not have to complete one piece before gathering for the next, but do have to keep materials for each batch separate. One piece may take several weeks to complete and one might take one day.</div><div class="MsoNormal">-this rule may change</div><div class="MsoNormal">-for that matter any of the rules may change</div><div class="MsoNormal">-I cannot use other materials I have around even if they seem like the perfect addition – I must stick to the materials gathered for that piece(s)</div><div class="MsoNormal">-I can use basic ingredients that I already have like background paper, mat board, glue, thread, scissors etc. </div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">When I had pondered this series previously there was a photographic component to it. I am not sure where this will come in yet. I had envisioned documenting the yard sale where the parts came from and perhaps the seller if he/she is willing. This aspect may need to wait. </div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">I have gathered three batches already and almost completed the first grouping of art from the first batch. It has been interesting to see how items that are like-minded seem to appear on a given gathering phase. Or am I just noticing those items because I have decided to go a certain way with the collection? </div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">And so I begin it.</div>Jude Bondhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13277365645458299536noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8772614344761116300.post-22048549109340296882011-06-14T03:23:00.000-07:002011-06-14T03:23:03.507-07:00The Cowgirls<style>

<div class="MsoNormal">I have been pondering this for a while.</div><div class="MsoNormal">It is time to voice my observations. I am more than a little bit intrigued by what I am going to call the Vampires and Cowl Necks phenomenon. I am speaking of the current obsession with vampires in books, movies, jewelry, fashion and mainstream advertising such as the new Cherry Dr. Pepper ad– (is that cherry cola or blood Fergie is pouring down her gullet?) <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nG0of3hLLWM">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nG0of3hLLWM</a></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">And while you are at it check out this Revlon lipstick ad for “Just Bitten Lip Stain”</div><div class="MsoNormal">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ooTBIuUbmM0</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">What intrigues me is not so much the vampire obsession, but the fact that it seems to be coupled with the fashion fad for the ever larger cowl, the oversized ruffled collar, and the ever more elaborate and spectacular “statement” necklace.<br />
<br />
Take a look at these wonderful cowls! </div><div class="MsoNormal"><a href="http://www.etsy.com/listing/62675168/the-mowl-mens-cowl-neck-scarf-warmer">http://www.etsy.com/listing/62675168/the-mowl-mens-cowl-neck-scarf-warmer</a></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">Can this be a coincidence? I think not.</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal"> At the same time many vampire glorifying guys and gals are venturing forth under the cloak of darkness to dim theaters to view vampires on the big screen, and ravenously reading novels about these thirsty creatures of the night, others, in presumably better lit places, are knitting and crocheting like crazy to create the biggest and thickest protective coverings for our collectively endangered pretty necks. </div><br />
<div class="MsoNormal">Our necks are on the line here. It is clear. The vampires are out there, or among us, and we better do our best to ward them off with leather, metal, beadwork, knit-wear, whatever it takes. Get out your leather working bench, your beading board, your over-sized crochet hooks and knitting needles ladies and gents and get to work! Its time to lick those vampires once and for all!</div>Jude Bondhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13277365645458299536noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8772614344761116300.post-62131027979716851902011-03-20T16:06:00.000-07:002011-03-20T16:08:31.194-07:00My Record Deal UpdateUpdate on my "record deal". It has been a most interesting process. Early on I met several times with the talented musician(we will call him S.) who requested my art work for his cd cover. I listened to a cd of rough cuts to familiarize myself with the tunes, themes, and mood of the album. Luckily I really liked the music and was inspired. I then began my artistic exploration to come up with a technique and imagery that would fit the bill. As is often the case I became obsessive about the trials and have worked an insane number of hours trying to get something that resonated with me for this particular piece. The back and forth with S. was most stimulating, both in person and via email. It has been a challenging and satisfying process. I am nearing the end of my time line and the end of my explorations, and soon will send along several finished works for S. to choose from. Then the piece will go on to the photographer to be shot, and then on to the graphic designer who will put the whole package together. As with every new project I have learned a great deal about a variety of new techniques that I can utilize in my own art work in the future. I came up with a whole new wacky and wonderful photo set up to create imagery, but I cannot divulge it at this time. Until the piece is done the entire project is a bit hush hush.<br />

Thoughts of spring lead me to thoughts of cocktail hats. Here are some spring toppers from last year. Most of these have gone to good homes. </div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: small;">My friend Diane calls it that. It amuses me. But it aint what you might think. No, I am not a ukulele prodigy after all and have not been signed by a prestigious label to cut my first tap dancing ukulele record. But I was recently asked by a talented local musician to create original artwork for the cover of his upcoming cd.</span><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: small;"> I am finding this project very exhilarating and exciting. I visualize a great deal when I listen to music. I find that words and music stimulate my visual brain and vice versa. </span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: small;">Years ago I spent a week at the Vermont Studio Center in a residency exploring the connection between my writing and my art making. It was a memorable time. I had the luxury of a complete lack of regular-life demands and I was able to just let my muse take me where she/he wanted me to go. I had a beautiful studio space in the painting building, and a nice big desk in my single room. I would write, and when the writing spurred a visual idea I would go to the studio and work, then as the studio practice sparked some writing I would return to my little garret to write some more. I befriended a poet and she invited me to the writing workshops where I was welcomed with friendly acceptance, and I read aloud like the real writers, sharing my works in progress.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: small;"> The only problem with the entire scenario was that there was a rule in the studio buildings that you could not play music out loud while you were working, only listen on headphones. This rule made sense, as the walls were thin, and it would not be fair to impose one’s musical selection upon others. Unfortunately, I did not know about the rule beforehand, and I did not have anything to listen to that fit the bill, so I missed the opportunity to explore the musical connection to my artmaking. I did learn things from working in the silence. It was a good practice for me to work sans music, but I missed it. </span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: small;">For many years now I have used a solo car ride with loud music blaring on the car stereo as my most reliable jump start for my creative process. Something gets jogged and jiggled in my heart and brain when I am meandering the back roads of Vermont with tunes blaring in my little moving room. I keep a small note pad and pen handy and jot down ideas as they come to me. I always feel refreshed and motivated after a drive, and ready to launch into some new project, or get un-stuck from the current project, thanks to the solutions that come to me on my drives.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: small;">So, it is with great excitement I have launched into this “record deal”. Stay tuned.</span></div>Jude Bondhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13277365645458299536noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8772614344761116300.post-79161139117525730192011-02-07T16:20:00.000-08:002011-02-07T16:20:50.983-08:00Cake In The Yard<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGdqrleirt7X-gF0y_QW5oKWVDxkkmHArk0tFWPwdXSU-BJFONhZMDXsToqIUtZEIdjqZGrPtXIX1uXgmFgJRUA5QK9dUlR91Jz8vSb8Nu-oB08ooNKgUTU9hMQxjc4Qam79s64RO2V5jK/s1600/cake+in+snow+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="224" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGdqrleirt7X-gF0y_QW5oKWVDxkkmHArk0tFWPwdXSU-BJFONhZMDXsToqIUtZEIdjqZGrPtXIX1uXgmFgJRUA5QK9dUlR91Jz8vSb8Nu-oB08ooNKgUTU9hMQxjc4Qam79s64RO2V5jK/s320/cake+in+snow+1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEieQrEc3cquURen8KcwrYXutXRGNRI76e7he_8tcO0sR094mLv8bREl6Eu6Dg4kOv9x3_XzHfNu9WPi5AveFb_46-tEgFM97BPlk1Ty1d0n1USL6Fg59fkJvpP6jiRak1G5pCTFRlbTOjS7/s1600/cake+in+snow+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="226" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEieQrEc3cquURen8KcwrYXutXRGNRI76e7he_8tcO0sR094mLv8bREl6Eu6Dg4kOv9x3_XzHfNu9WPi5AveFb_46-tEgFM97BPlk1Ty1d0n1USL6Fg59fkJvpP6jiRak1G5pCTFRlbTOjS7/s320/cake+in+snow+2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjoZE2V0jbDpUxWHAt0x8yhMwmQbtf4Oi1HKxW5p-R6zSuJzq51F9TPtS1Jo-q93z9YSUb9P2dwbyA1gAYo9ZtIiP2YJlhwpQGT8sK2xJBX1J9NgLWW0AKveczxpVDNKv1x8Dxpb4g_z1rm/s1600/cake+in+snow+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="223" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjoZE2V0jbDpUxWHAt0x8yhMwmQbtf4Oi1HKxW5p-R6zSuJzq51F9TPtS1Jo-q93z9YSUb9P2dwbyA1gAYo9ZtIiP2YJlhwpQGT8sK2xJBX1J9NgLWW0AKveczxpVDNKv1x8Dxpb4g_z1rm/s320/cake+in+snow+3.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_82yCmTrhGZw/TVCL0QWUIYI/AAAAAAAAAGo/s1600/cake+in+snow+2.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_82yCmTrhGZw/TVCL0QWUIYI/AAAAAAAAAGo/s1600/cake+in+snow+2.jpg" /></a></div>Just when I think one of my ideas is strange I come upon something that lets me know I am on the right track, or at least that I am not all alone on the track. I headed south to what I call " Big Sky Country", otherwise known as Addison County. There is usually something interesting going on with the sky down that way. I had hoped to photograph where they blew up the Crown Point bridge and are working on the new one, but the road was closed off and I could not get anywhere near the site. It was real cold, windy and wintry, but I made frequent stops and took a lot of pics. Here are a few.Jude Bondhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13277365645458299536noreply@blogger.com2
